The Love Bug

"You know, most cars are ordinary, but one or two of em turn out to be something special."
―Jim Douglas[src]

Herbie is an anthropomorphic 1963 Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle, a character that is featured in several Disney motion pictures starting with the 1969 feature film The Love Bug. He has a mind of his own and is capable of driving himself, and is a serious contender in auto racing competitions. Throughout most of the franchise, Herbie is distinguished by red, white, and blue racing stripes from front to back bumper, a racing-style number "53" on the front trunk lid, doors, and engine lid, and a yellow-on-black '63 California license plate that says, "OFP 857". One exception to this is his first introduction in The Love Bug, where he initially appears as a nondescript white VW Type 1 bug vehicle with a gray colored fabric sunroof (a.k.a. "ragtop"), the style of sunroof offered on VW Beetles made through 1963.

  • In The Love Bug (1969), Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo (1977), and as well as Herbie Goes Bananas (1980) Herbie The Love Bug did not have the traditional VW emblem on his hood as VW did not give Disney the trademark rights to use the VW name on Herbie, by Herbie Rides Again, Herbie The Love Bug TV Series and Herbie: Fully Loaded however VW gave Disney the rights to use the VW emblem on Herbie.
  • In Herbie Rides Again and Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo he gets a Fog Light mounted on his front hood which is actually a prop to hide a camera so the driver could see where Herbie was driving. In Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo his ragtop sunroof is now dark gray instead of the original light gray as seen in the first two Herbie The Love Bug Films his sunroof would later return to the original light gray in Herbie Goes Bananas. In Herbie: Goes to Monte Carlo he still has the Fog Light mounted on his hood but now has a Fog Light cover to conceal to hood mounted Fog Light.
