A 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am, similar to the one featured in the movie.

"New car. Gotta have a new car to block for the truck."
―The Bandit, to Little Enos, the latter of which is giving cash to the Bandit for any necessities for the delivery.

The 1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am is the car driven by the Bandit in the first Smokey and the Bandit movie.

Appearance[]

The model featured in the movie is a black 1976 model with a golden trim. It is modified to have a 1977 model year front bumper, as that model had not made it to market during the filming of the first movie. The Trans-Am featured in the movie also has a "6.6 Litre" sticker on the hood scoop, unlike the actual Trans-Am, which had a "T/A 6.6" sticker instead.

Use in the Movie[]

In the movie, Bo (who's handle is "The Bandit") uses money obtained from Big Enos and Little Enos to purchase the car. He uses the car to distract police (known as "Smokeys" or "Bears" by rig drivers, hence the name of the movie) from a shipment of 400 cases of Coors Light beer, as it was being bootlegged from Texarkana for a celebration party hosted by Big Enos.

Fun Facts[]

  • Four cars were supplied for filming, but only one car survived long enough to be sold at auction in 2022 for just under 500 thousand dollars.
  • The movie supposedly caused the Firebird Trans-Am to sell so well that Pontiac delayed the next model.
